The Facts about Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in America.  According to statistics, about 45 millions of Americans have genital herpes aged 12 and above.  The condition can become very painful and can cause a lot of discomfort.  Genital herpes can still spread even in the absence of any other notable signs and symptoms.  It is common among those who are of low socio-economic status, low-education, and those who are indulging in substance abuse, such as cocaine.  It is most prevalent on those who are highly sexually active.

Cause:

Genital herpes is caused by HSV-2 or Herpes Simplex Virus type 2.  The virus is transmitted through sexual intercourse, anal intercourse, and vaginal intercourse.  There is also evidence that genital-oral contact can transmit the infection.  If you are pregnant, there is also a great possibility that you will pass the infection to your baby especially if this is the first time that you have had an outbreak.

Signs and Symptoms

Some people have genital herpes without developing any remarkable signs and symptoms.  On others, the condition is passed off as a mild case of itching that warrants no medical attention.  More often than not, these types of asymptomatic genital herpes infection are the reason for the high number of infection.   Normally, genital herpes will manifest the following signs and symptoms:

Lesion found at the genital or anal area resembling that of a small blister that is red, inflamed, and very painful.  Itching or burning sensation at the site of the lesion

Swollen lymph nodes at the groin area as your immune system fights off the virus.

Increased vaginal discharge

Flu-like symptoms

Treatment

Treatment of genital herpes is directed towards the symptoms and not at the infection.  Once you have the virus, you will be infected for the rest of your life.  Medications are given to relieve the symptoms of pain, resolve outbreaks, and lengthening the time between outbreaks. These medications are:

Acyclovir (Zovirax)

Famciclovir (Famvir)

Valacyclovir (Valtrex)These anti-viral medications are taken 7-10 days.  If you are unfortunate enough to get the type of genital herpes outbreaks or recurrences for 6 times a year or more, you may need to take all of those medications at the same time.

If you suspect that you have genital herpes, you and your partner must undergo simultaneous screening at once.  Both of you must undergo treatment to help fight the infection and lessen the potency of the virus.
