| Probenecid is a medication that helps prevent the tubular reabsorption of uric acid in the kidneys. As a result, excess uric acid is eliminated in the urine effectively lowering down the levels of uric acid in the blood. Probenicid is given in a prescription as a maintenance drug to prevent gout. This means that this is not to be taken in during acute gout attacks. Taking probenecid in the presence of an attack will increase the severity of symptoms and will only worsen your condition. Formulation: Probenecid comes in tablet form of 500 mg formulation Usage: The drug is taken according to your doctor’s specification. Usually, they would recommend that you take 250 mg orally twice a day for the first week or two to see if your system will accept the therapy. Afterwards, dose is increased to 500 mg twice a day to reach a therapeutic level of 2-3 g daily. The dose is taken after a meal and with a full glass of water. Laboratory tests are done every 6 months to see the effects of the drug and to reduce the levels if necessary. It is important that you maintain a daily intake of 2-3 liters of water daily unless contraindicated. Taking in less than 2 litters or 8 glasses of water will increase your risk of forming renal stones and renal damage. Limit the amount of vitamin C in your diet to prevent formation of renal stones. If you miss a dose, take the medicine immediately once you remember. However, if it is already nearly time for your next dose, disregard the missed dose and take in the next one as scheduled. Special Considerations: Inform your doctor if you have the following medical conditions: Renal disease Congestive heart failure Stomach or gastric ulcer Allergy to any form of medication Probenecid is not to be used when: There is presence of renal stones An active or present acute gout attack Anemia Because of the importance of having adequate water intake is a must, those with congestive heart failure and kidney problems are advised to inform their doctor of the condition. Patients with this condition are usually in a strict water intake regimen, especially congestive heart failure. Side Effects Common side effects of probenecid include: Nausea and vomiting Increased urinary frequency Nephritic syndrome Anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions Anemia Hematuria or bloody urine Worsening of gout symptoms Always remember to keep your appointment of laboratory test to monitor the effects of the drug. If you experience any form of allergic reaction, stop taking the medication immediately no matter how mild the reaction is. Never use aspirin or any drug containing the compound as it will worsen gout conditions while taking probenecid. Alcohol is also contraindicated as it incrass uric acid levels. If you are taking any antibiotics during the course of the treatment, observe strict compliance and observe your condition as probenecid is known to increase and maintain the therapeutic levels of antibiotics in the blood. |
