When you’ve spent most of your youth outdoors, you’ll see that there are parts on your face that have dark pigmentation. This makes your skin look less than stellar, and for most people, they want to regain that flawless look they once enjoyed. The dark pigmentation marks are caused by what experts call melasma. As common as this is, many end up hating the way they look. Stress can also be another factor that aggravates the appearance of these dark pigmentations. While whitening creams promise to give you outstanding results, these don’t really work.

Right now, you need to go to your dermatologist or doctor. Talk to him about getting a chemical peel because this is a more effective treatment for melasma. The entire procedure involves the application of a chemical solution on your face so it peels off the dead skin. The younger skin underneath will be exposed and what happens is that you get a fresh complexion because this layer has no blemishes and is free from wrinkles. So aside from targeting discoloration, it’s also a nice option to stave off aging.

The solution applied is quite strong as it is made from acid. Only an expert will know the proportion of the chemical to be used on you. If you try to do it yourself, you could end up burning your skin and coming out of the entire experience looking a lot worse. Basically, there are three types of chemical peels: light, medium, and deep peels. The mildest form consists of glycolic, lactic, fruit, and salicylic acids. The stinging sensation isn’t as intense and no anesthesia will be involved. The whole process takes about a few minutes and you can resume work soon after. The medium peel, on the other hand, uses trichloroacetic acids for the peeling solution. Again, this is still performed in the clinic and anesthesia may be used if you have a low tolerance for pain. You can go back within a few months for another round. Otherwise, the healing process is also fast. The last kind is the deep peel wherein phenol acid is used. This isn’t recommended to just anyone because the solution is quite strong. Only people suffering from extreme skin conditions are allowed to go through such procedure.

When you’re not careful with the application of the acids, you can suffer from burns, as said earlier, and scars. The cost also varies, but some of them can go as high as $1,000, a high price to pay for younger-looking skin. If you don’t want acid on your face, you can opt for a new kind of procedure called Cosmelan. This new product is said to be safe on all skin types. Basically, the treatment will inhibit the production of a compound called tyrosinase, an enzyme that creates melanin.

You will be asked to put on a special mask before a cream is applied. You will be asked to apply this cream regularly after, but the disadvantage is that this consists of strong de-pigmenting agents. The feedbacks have been positive and this could cost less than a chemical peel. You also need to think about the substances in the list of ingredients because some of them could actually increase your chance for getting cancer. It’s best to consult with your doctor first to make sure you get what is safest for you.
