Kids are typically playful. They run around. They go out by themselves and even play by themselves. In addition to that, they also like to play with animals especially with our pets. However, being a kid with little experience they often didn’t know when these animals would like to play and when didn’t want to be disturbed.
For that reason, many kids are being bitten by animals. A bite from animals or even a scratch coming from them that has penetrated the skin can be too dangerous. Why? Because they may cause infection to our kids’ skin or even transmit a very dangerous virus.
Rabies is typically being transmitted when an animal has bitten us. This is a life threatening disease. However, aside from that, we may be infected by a more horrible virus by being bitten b y animals. Remember the Ebola virus outbreak? It all started with monkeys and it has caused so many lives.
Therefore, what are we going to do if we, and most specially our kids, have been bitten by an animal? Take a look at these simple instructions that you SHOULD follow to avoid further complications.
1. Wash. You must wash the bite and its surrounding area with soap and water. Wash thoroughly and apply some pressure. Do this until the bleeding has stopped and use a clean cloth or sterilized gauze to clean the wounds.
2. Antibiotic. Immediately apply an antibiotic to the wound after the bleeding has stopped.
3. Gauze. Cover the bitten area with a sterile gauze or a bandage
4. Medicate. If the pain is unbearable, drink an anti-pain tablet such as an ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
After you have followed those steps, you must ask your child what animal has bitten him, why he was bitten and when the incident occurred. Remember not to scold your child since he may not divulge the information on why he was bitten by an animal. Talk to him nicely and remember all the information that he will give you. You might need it when you rush him to the hospital.
After you have applied the first aid, then don’t think twice if you are going to the hospital or not especially if the bite has penetrated the skin or if you know that a wild animal is the culprit of the incident. In addition to that, if you know that the animal has no anti-rabies shots or the animal is acting weird already, then you really must go into the hospital and ask for anti-tetanus and anti-rabies shots.
Animal bites are really common and it can be prevented by keeping an eye on you child whenever he is near with animals. Teach your child how to handle animals and how to interact with them. Remember that animals can be nice if you are nice to them but they can also cause trouble if they are scared and threatened.
